Tracking and Recovering Nazi-Looted Art: A Report from the Front Lines
Mr. Schoenberg is a partner at Burris &
Schoenberg, LLP , in Los Angeles.
He has represented clients such as the Jewish owners of Nazi-looted art,
including six important paintings by Gustav Klimt valued at $150 million.
He also secured the temporary restraining order securing $10 million
painting by Pablo Picasso that was looted by the Nazis;
He was a member of the lawyers
delegation to official U.S.-Austria negotiations concerning holocaust
property restitution sponsored by U.S Department of State, representing
over 50 families and class of all Austrian-Jewish holocaust victims and
heirs. In previous business and entertainment litigation , Mr.
Schoenberg represented entertainment personalities Kim Basinger, Chevy
Chase, Michael Jackson, Magic Johnson, Charlie Sheen, Ivan Reitman, Jon
Peters and others in various matters;
Named by Los Angeles Daily Journal as one of the"Top 20 under 40" -- May,
2003, Mr. Schoenberg writes numerous newspaper articles and letters.
Another responsibility in his life is caretaking the respected name and
reputation of his grandfather, composer Arnold Schoenberg. He
authored the book, "Arnold Schoenberg and
Albert Einstein: Their Relationship and Views on Zionism"
reviewed by Robert Craft in The New York Review of Books.
He edited the
correspondence of Arnold Schoenberg
and Thomas Mann for an Italian
publisher. Locally, he wrote the foreword for a catalogue of an
exhibit entitled "Exiles in Paradise" at the Hollywood Bowl Museum.
He also generously donates his time to nonprofits such as the
L.A. Jewish Symphony (Board of
Directors), ASCAP, The Jewish
Federation Martyr's Memorial L.A. Museum of the Holocaust (Board of
Directors, Programs Chair), JewishGen
Bohemia-Moravia Special Interest Group Moderator, the Boards of
