Dinner with a
Scholar

On
Saturday, January 8, 2005, nine festive dinners will take place, eight in the
homes of supporters of the Bureau of Jewish Education of Orange County, and
one in the Chemers Art Gallery. Each simultaneous dinner hosts a
different scholar for the evening. “Dinner with A Scholar” is the only major
fundraising event for the Bureau. Scholars scheduled to attend:
-
Dr. Marilyn J. Harran
holds the
Stern chair in Holocaust Education and is the founding Director of the
Rodgers Center for Holocaust Education at Chapman University. Hear her
story about how Holocaust information is received by college students and
its impact on our community.
-
Brion Jeannette has designed
some of the most dramatic Newport Beach homes. His career as an architect
aligns with his Jewish commitment to respect our environment and honor the
family. Hear and see first-hand how Brion's philosophy is reflected in his
own home.
-
Rabbi Isaac Jeret
is the
President of Brandeis-Bardin Institute. His vision of the Jewish future,
his spiritual presence, and his commitment to the Jewish people promise a
spirited discussion of the contemporary fascination with Kabbalah and a taste of the real thing!
-
Laurie Levenson is Professor
of Law at Loyola Law School. She also happens to be the country's foremost
legal commentator on high-profile cases. Come hear her discuss some of
these infamous cases from both an American and a Jewish law perspective.
-
Dr. Stephen and Robbie Prepas
have volunteered their considerable medical talents in some of the most
forbidding places around the world for decades. Hear about their
amazing--and uplifting---journeys around the globe helping others with
first rate ophthalmic and prenatal care.
-
Dr. Uzi Rabi will discuss
the Judeao-Islamic kaleidoscope: is there a hope for the future? As
professor of Middle Eastern and African history at Tel Aviv University in
Israel, he is an expert on the topic. Join us for a timely discussion
about the "big picture": peace in the Middle East.
-
E. Randol Schoenberg has
used his legal talent around the world, most notably when representing
clients in celebrated cases such as the Jewish owners of Nazi-looted art,
including six important paintings by Gustav Klimt valued at $150 million.
Let Mr. Schoenberg take you on his journey--a stirring testimony to the
powers of justice.
-
Dr. Dvora Weisberg
is
Associate Professor of Rabbinics and Director of the Beit Midrash at the
Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in LA. Choose to hear
this dynamic teacher explain how the Judaism of today came to be!
-
Johanna Gold will spearhead
the Bureau Alumni dinner. She is a 20-year old French Jewish university
student, who will talk about the anti-Semitism and anti-Israel sentiments
in France. Join us as we talk about being single, being Jewish, and being
French. Oo-la-lah! **This dinner is limited to Bureau Youth Programs alums
ages 18-29 and is specially priced.
